Former Sports Minister, Bolaji Abdullahi has advocated that the present leadership of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria needs to make way, if the country were to see better days in track and field.
Abdullahi, who served under former President Goodluck Jonathan also called on the board of the Nigeria Weightlifting Federation to be changed. He argued that those in charge of the two sports federation have no reason to continue following the poor performances recorded in two consecutive Olympics Games.
“The people in charge of those federation have over stayed. There is nothing they have to offer to Nigerians. For the country to make progress in athletics and weightlifting, the current leadership need to make way.
“Take for instance Nigeria Table Tennis. Their leadership is vibrant and that was why Aruna Quadri did well at the Olympics,” said Abdullahi on Brilafm sports radio.
AFN president Solomon Ogba had always blamed lack of funding for the poor state of the sport in the country. However, some of his critics argued that his method of leadership was also a factor in the declining fortunes of athletics in the country.
Ogba, almost lost his position during the last federations’ elections in 2013, but it was the same Abdullahi who ensured that Ogba earned a second term.
