Barcelona are ready to demonstrate an enormous show of faith in goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen by extending the goalkeeper’s contract, which still has three years to run.
The Catalan giants recently paid £12million to bring in former Ajax No 1 Jasper Cillessen as a replacement for Claudio Bravo, the Chilean keeper who has moved to Manchester City.
But after starting his team’s La Liga opening-day victory over Athletic Bilbao, Ter Stegen has been further boosted by Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu stating his intention to tie down the 24-year-old to a long-term deal.
‘[Ter Stegen] is a fundamental piece in the future of Barcelona,’ Bartomeu said (As well as) (Ivan) Rakitic, (Luis) Suarez and (Lionel) Messi, he is a lynchpin and our commitment to him is strong.’
While Rakitic, Suarez and Messi are integral members of manager Luis Enrique’s side, Ter Stegen has largely been restricted to cup football for the past two seasons.
After joining from Borussia Monchengladach two years ago, the German didn’t feature once in La Liga as Barcelona pipped Real Madrid to the 2014-15 title. And after making just seven league appearances as his team retained their Spanish crown last term he was reported to be considering his future.
It would appear, however, that the five-time European champions are determined to hang on to the man who helped them win the Champions League in 2015.
Ter Stegen has also won two Spanish Cups, a UEFA Super Cup and a FIFA Club World Cup with Barcelona.
He has just returned to his club from international duty, where he acted as understudy to Manuel Neuer as Germany began their World Cup qualifying campaign with a 3-0 win in Norway.
But it would appear that back at Barca Ter Stegen has established himself as the undisputed No 1.
