Lagos—THE Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr. Idiat Adebule has urged the Nigerian media to make governments at all levels accountable in order to ensure good governance in the country.
Adebule, who made the appeal at the Annual Public Lecture and book presentation event organized by the Nigerian Union of Journalists, Lagos Information Chapel in Lagos, said for any government to enjoy acceptability and efficiency, prompt information must be made available to citizens.
The deputy governor, who was represented by the Tutor-General, Permanent Secretary of District I, Mrs. Abiose Ayandele, lauded the information managers in the state for their professionalism in ensuring accurate dissemination of the policies and programmes of the government to the citizenry.
She affirmed that the Information Chapel of the NUJ did not only excel in the propagation of the state government’s activities, but also engage in agenda setting efforts.
Adebule reiterated the current administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of Lagos residents through infrastructure provision and renewal, urging the information managers to maintain the practice of reporting government activities promptly.
In his lecture entitled: ‘All Inclusive Governance, Lagos State in Perspective’, Vice Chancellor of the Lagos State University, LASU, Professor Olanrewaju Fagbohun stated that the people have the right to participate actively in governance for meaningful development.
He said: “All people including the poor, women, ethnic and religious minorities, indigenous people and other disadvantaged groups have the right to participate meaningfully in governance processes and also influence decisions that affected them.”
Earlier, in his address Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Steve Ayorinde, stressed the need to encourage intel.
