Super Falcons defender, Onome Ebi has expressed regrets over the African champions’ failure to feature in the recently concluded Rio 2016 Olympics.

Ebi who was reflecting on the matches and African participation lamented that the Super Falcons could have done better.

“It wasn’t a good feelings at all that we couldn’t qualify for the Games, it was so sad. Watching all the games, I felt the Super Falcons would have done better this time,” said the player who made her only Olympic appearance so far at the 2008 Games.

The Super Falcons were the only African representation at the Olympics in Beijing 2008 and up to date they are rated by FIFA as the best African team in the women Olympics soccer.

However, missing two Olympics back to back have left the players feeling frustrated. They missed the chance to play in Rio after falling to Equatorial Guinea on a 2-1 aggregate. Zimbabwe later replaced Equatorial Guinea after they were disqualified for fielding a suspended player. South Africa were the other African team.

They lost two games, 2-0 to China and 1-0 to Sweden and drew 0-0 with the hosts Brazil. Zimbabwe, making Olympics debut and first appearance at the world stage were hammered 6-1 by Germany and Australia. They also lost to Canada 3-1.

But looking ahead at the AFCON Women coming up in November in Cameroon, Ebi who has won the title four times stated that the Super Falcons will make amends.

“As for the women Afcon, we are very ready to work our heads to the last. We know African countries are really coming out strong but we are coming super stronger,” said the player who is playing in the UEFA women champions league with her club FC Minsk Belarus.
