THE South South chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, has called on President Muhammedu Buhari, to take a critical look at the curriculum of secondary education with a view to reintroducing history into the nation’s education system.

Making the appeal in Asaba during the just concluded Delta State 25th anniversary celebration, chairman of South South CAN, and president of Niger Delta Bishops Forum, Archbishop Goddowell Avwomakpa, said it is worrisome the way young Nigerians are losing grip of history—a very vital part of any nation and her people.

The cleric, who is also the president, Christ Missionaries Crusaders, argued that if the Buhari administration who was elected on the change mantra fails to reintroduce history into the nation’s school curriculum, the government should stop the celebration Army Remembrance Day and other historical events. Avwomakpa wondered why the nation named some monuments after certain national figures if there is no deliberate plan to document for posterity, written records that generations yet unborn can fall back on.

The CAN leader further wondered why history teachers are going into extinction in Nigeria while the rest of the world is encouraging the teaching of the subject in their formative schools.

According to the archbishop to deny the younger generation written records of past events is to allow others who keep such records to write our history which, he argued, portends grave danger to our national psyche, noting that Nigeria is the first country to remove history from its school curriculum. The implication, according to him, is that a time will come when historians from other nations will write Nigeria’s history.
