Vandals steal electric cables, plunge expressway into darkness

The Federal Capital Territory Administration, said suspected vandals have carted away various sizes of electric armoured cables stretching over 1.7 kilometers along the Murtala Muhammed Expressway (Kubwa Road), Abuja.

Following the vandalization, parts of the expressway had been thrown into darkness, according to a statement on Monday in Abuja by the Chief Press Secretary to the FCT minister, Muhammad Sule.

It added that the stolen 99mm and 25mm cables were estimated to cost millions of naira, noting that they were vandalised between Zuba Interchange and the Army check-point at Dei-Dei, and the area between between Muhammad Abubakar Police Barrack, Jibi and police check-point before the Railway Overhead Bridge.

The statement said the FCT minister, Malam Muhammad Bello, who visited the scene, reiterated the resolve of the FCT Administration to take stern measures against vandals, stressing that the government would not condone the wanton destruction of public infrastructure and utilities.

It said, “Bello, who was represented at the inspection of the sites of the vandalised cables by the Acting Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority, Umar Jibrin, was visibly shocked at the level of destruction and removal of several millions of Naira worth of cables by vandals, which has thrown those portions of the Expressway into total darkness.

“The minister, described the action of the vandals as highly deplorable and an act of sabotage that is capable of slowing down the development of the FCT.”

The statement said Bello, called on residents to continue to support the FCT Administration by exposing all criminal elements in their immediate neighbourhoods as well as report any suspicious movement of persons around public utilities to the security agencies.

“The minister, thus directed the security agents to take the surveillance of public facilities more seriously particularly the electrical installations,” it added.
