The President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, has urged the various ethnic groups in the country to come together as one in unity and fairness so there can be progress in the nation.

He said this during the commissioming of the Edo State University in Iyahmo, Etsako West local Government Area and Ugbegun-Ujiogba Ebudin-Igueben-Ewohinmi Road in Edo Central Senatorial District.

The President, who commended his administration’s effort in making Nigeria better, stated that they had achieved success in the areas of security, economy and fight against corruption.

“I am not deterred over such cases of criticisms because I am focused and I am happy that many Nigerians have started realising whatever we are doing and trying to do, to fix this country for the better. Our problem as a nation started when we abandoned agriculture, our hides and skins, cocoa export, palm kernel and engaged in oil business.

“Once petroleum was discovered and developed in large quantity, we threw everything to the dust. Now petroleum is diving from 100 dollars to between 40 and 50 dollars per barrel and that is the price we are paying now. What we have done to our agriculture, power, rails, road, and social infrastructure, education and health?

“We have been wasteful and now we have to go back to land, solid minerals and do a lot of savings so that we can leave a better country for our children and our great nation,” he said.

The president further lamented about the likely outcome of agricultural produce in the country if the rain had failed to come this year.

“I wonder what the future would have been if the rains have failed to come this year as there are no savings, no infrastructure and there is hunger in the land.”

He also commended the efforts of the Edo state governor for his doggedness and discipline to hardwork. He described the governor as one with good foresight, and integrity which he had exhibited in the last eight years.

The president also expressed optimism in Governor Oshiomole working for the nation even after leaving the office as a governor.
